About

This blog details my journey into the low carb lifestyle. I am a middle aged professor of marketing who directs study abroad programs for my college of business, and I have had a lifelong struggle with my weight. I have twice lost over 100 pounds, only to regain it both times, because I essentially starved the weight off. When the starving stopped, the weight came back on. I was even a leader at Weight Watchers for about a year, until I could not keep the weight I lost off and had to resign. I am also a type II diabetic (with all the usual markers of metabolic syndrome) and was convinced I would die early, since I could not lose the weight and keep it off.

Then I read a truly amazing book called Why We Get Fat and What to Do About It by Gary Taubes. He explained why semi-starvation diets ultimately fail and laid out an alternative plan, a low carb way of living. His examples were spot on and the descriptions he had of failed dieters exactly mirrored my own experience, so I decided to give his method a try.

This blog details the steps along that journey. I started out a fairly naive adherent to the low carb lifestyle, but as I have progressed, I have learned a great deal about the lifestyle. It works as advertised and has allowed me to lose a considerable amount of weight, without feeling hungry all the time. It is also a very healthy diet, but not "healthy" in the usual sense of the word. It is healthy because it really works to lower weight, blood glucose levels, high blood pressure, cardio-vascular disease, and a lot of other issues that I discuss in the blog.

This blog is my discovery of enlightenment as I learn that most of what I have been taught about nutrition is wrong. It is my attempt to share my new understanding with any and all interested readers.
