According to this study in the New England Journal of Medicine, a diet higher in protein and lower in the glycemic index was significantly better at maintaining weight loss than a low protein, high carb diet. Those who lost weight and tried to maintain the weight loss with a low carb, high glycemic (high carb) gained back the most weight.
Is it any surprise that low fat, high carb diets like I used to follow have a terrible success rate of people trying to maintain weight loss? When I think of all the money I spent on Weight Watchers, I could cry.
